PLATINUM GUIDE

About Platinum

Platinum is a naturally white metal that will never lose its brilliant lustre. Called the "King of Metals", platinum is a very heavy (nearly twice the weight of gold), naturally silver-white metal that is very ductile and lustrous. Although it is a soft metal, its density makes it more durable than other jewellery metals, so it does not tarnish or wear away with time and lasts forever. It does not corrode at any temperature. Platinum is rare, in fact, 30 times more so than gold.

Platinum is usually compared to white gold in jewellery. Both appear the same, but there are some major differences between the two. Platinum is naturally white with purity of 95% whereas white gold is an alloy created using yellow gold. The thin rhodium plating on white gold usually needs to be re-plated over time to maintain its white colour, adding additional expense to the buyer.

Platinum has a white luster that never diminishes, thereby enhancing a diamond’s sparkle. Platinum’s subtle beauty and superior durability makes it an excellent metal for setting of diamonds and gemstones. Platinum's resistance to wear and tarnish is well suited for making fine beautiful jewellery. Platinum does not change shape so your jewellery will last a lifetime.Platinum is a very popular choice when it comes to wedding bands and engagement rings. Platinum is naturally hypoallergenic, so it can be worn every day.

Platinum Purity

Platinum jewelry contains either 90% or 95% pure platinum. Small amounts of iridium and ruthenium are commonly added to it, to give it a harder, stronger alloy that retains the advantages of pure platinum. Usually 95% pure, platinum never fades or tarnishes but keeps its natural white colour for a lifetime.

Hallmarking

When judging the value of platinum jewellery, always ensure that the material is indeed platinum (and not another metal, such as white gold) by checking for the amount of platinum content on the back of the piece. There is a symbol or mark that is stamped inside each piece of platinum jewellery. Usually, it bears the purity hallmark of 950. Platinum content is usually marked as “950”, "950Pt", "950 Plat", or "Plat". You can identify a piece of platinum jewellery by its hallmark - a symbol or mark to indicate that it is high quality platinum.

Price of Platinum

Platinum is denser than gold, so an identical ring made in platinum rather than gold would be around 40% heavier. Platinum is very rare, in fact, 30 times more so than gold and is found in a few places throughout the world. And its rarity as a metal is often been associated with exclusivity and wealth. Due to this factor, Platinum jewellery consistently commands higher prices because of its rarity. The process of making a piece of platinum jewellery also requires a higher level of craftsmanship. This is the reason why making charges of Platinum Jewellery is more expensive when compared to Gold Jewellery.

Worth of Platinum

Platinum is eternal, with everlasting radiance and durability. Platinum jewellery is exclusive, a statement of individuality and a perfect gift to celebrate love. It is the preferred metal of choice by the young at heart as a statement of individuality for jewellery that spells lifelong companionship. Precious platinum is the perfect choice for the woman of today – it is beautiful, versatile and elegant, yet it has hidden strength and resilience. Choosing precious platinum is the perfect way to express your own individuality, strength and style.

Platinum Care

Ensure your precious platinum pieces remain in perfect condition with advice and tips on jewellery storage, cleaning and maintenance.

Cleaning

Platinum jewellery can be cleaned with the conventional ways of cleaning gold jewellery. Soaking platinum in a mild solution of soap and warm water, gently scrubbing it with a soft-bristled brush and merely buffing it with a soft cloth is usually all that is required to maintain the metal's lustre.

Have your platinum jewellery polished every six months if you are interested in maintaining a high shine. Look for a qualified jeweller or an authorised platinum retailer for all adjustments, resizing, polishing and cleaning.

Caring

Platinum is very easy to care for. All precious metals scratch, and platinum is no exception. It is unique in that the metal is only displaced, not lost. However, despite its durability, platinum jewellery needs proper care.

If your platinum is set with diamonds or other precious stones, remove your platinum jewellery when undertaking heavy work. It is also advisable not to handle bleach or harsh chemicals when wearing your jewellery. Unlike gold, platinum is more durable, and does not get easily tarnished and discoloured by chlorine and other chemicals. Although they won’t hurt the platinum, chemicals may discolour diamonds or gemstones.

Storage

Avoid placing/storing your platinum jewellery with other pieces that can scratch it. Store pieces separately, in a jewellery box or chamois bag.
